What is Bluecard?

Bluecard has been developed through concern that safety and awareness training within the Transport Industry needed to be improved. Industry and all levels of government now agree that there is a need for some minimum accreditation to be generically adopted throughout the Transport Industry.

The key purpose of the Bluecard is to stop fatalities and injuries in the Transport Industry. The Bluecard Transport Industry OHS/WHS Program was formed in response to the need for improved safety performance. The Bluecard is recognition of the operators OHS/WHS skills. Industry and all levels of government now agree that there is a need for some minimum accreditation to be generically adopted throughout the Transport Industry.

Currently being a truck driver in Australia is one of the most dangerous occupations. Analysis quoted on the Safe Work Australia web site, from an ABS work-related injuries survey, showed that transport & storage workers aged 35 to 54 years recorded an injury rate 75% higher than the rate recorded by all Australian workers of this age.

It commences by the participant either completing an OHS/WHS assessment or providing evidence to an assessor that they have the knowledge and skills listed in TLIF1001 Follow work health and safety procedures. This is a National Competency Standard. The unit outlines the skills and knowledge required to follow and apply occupational health and safety (OHS/WHS) procedures when carrying out work activities. It includes identifying and following workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control, contributing to arrangements for the management of occupational health and safety, and completing occupational health and safety records. Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

This competency is one of the competencies required to obtain a Certificate in the Transport and Logistics Training Package.

Duration and Delivery

The Duration of the Bluecard program is 6 hours.

The Registered Training Organisation will issue a Statement of Attainment for TLIF1001 Follow work health and safety procedures to the applicant, upon successful completion.

The holder of a Bluecard understands and can undertake the (OHS/WHS) roles and responsibilities of employees and employers, raising the baseline safety standard in organisations. Bluecard produces attitudinal change within participants, offsetting the "she’ll be right’’ work habits.

The OHS/WHS training behind the Bluecard identifies that when people change jobs or work environments, they have a responsibility to ensure they learn, understand and practice the new procedures and policies. The course builds the understanding that a competent person will ensure they do so.
