Across Australia, businesses are facing increasing pressure to build skilled, capable teams while navigating skills shortages and evolving industry demands. For many employers, traineeships are becoming one of the most effective ways to develop talent, strengthen workforce capability and support employee growth.
A traineeship allows employees to earn while they learn, combining paid work with structured, nationally recognised training. For employers, this means staff develop practical skills that directly support business operations, while employees gain a qualification and valuable workplace experience.
Understanding how traineeships work and how they can be paired with formal qualifications can help employers make informed decisions about workforce development.
The traineeship model
Traineeships combine employment with structured training delivered by a registered training organisation. Employees work in their role while completing training that leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
Unlike traditional study alone, traineeships integrate learning directly into the workplace. Employees build skills through real tasks, guided by both their employer and training provider.
This model allows businesses to develop staff who understand their workplace systems, processes and culture while gaining formal recognition for their skills.
According to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), more than 307,080 active apprentices and trainees were in training across Australia in 2025. This highlights the scale of work-based learning and its importance in developing Australia’s workforce.
Why traineeships are valuable for employers
For employers, traineeships offer a practical solution to workforce capability challenges. Studies reveal ‘More than 8 in 10 employers of apprentices and trainees surveyed identify them as important or very important to their business.’
Hiring a trainee/apprentice offers employers the following benefits:
- ‘Gain an enthusiastic and ready-to-learn new starter on your team
- Train them to meet your business’s current and future needs
- Off-the-job learning can bring new ideas to the workplace
- Give back to the community and pass on your valuable experience
- You may also be eligible for financial incentives when you hire apprentices.’
Rather than recruiting externally for hard-to-fill roles, businesses can develop talent internally and build a workforce that understands their specific operations. Employees gain structured training while continuing to contribute to daily business activities.
Research also shows strong outcomes for participants. The Australian Industry Group reports that employment outcomes for apprentices and trainees continue to improve, with many graduates moving into ongoing employment after completing their training.
Traineeships can also improve employee engagement and retention. When staff see clear pathways for growth and development within an organisation, they are more likely to remain committed to their role and workplace. Training and development programs can increase employee retention by up to 14 per cent.
Employers who take on apprentices or trainees may be eligible for a range of financial supports, including wage subsidies, hiring incentives and payments to offset training and supervision costs. The type and amount of support depend on factors such as the qualification, industry, and whether the role is considered a priority occupation, helping reduce the overall cost of building and developing a skilled workforce.
‘Employers may be eligible to receive a Priority Hiring Incentive of up to $2,500 in the first year of an apprenticeship/traineeship, paid over two instalments of:
- $1,000 at 6 months and $1,500 at 12 months (full-time)
- $500 at 6 months and $750 at 12 months (part-time).’
Small businesses in particular benefit from this approach. Data from the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman shows that a large proportion of apprentices and trainees are employed by small businesses, namely 42 per cent, highlighting how work-based training helps smaller organisations build skilled teams.
At the same time, national workforce strategies recognise the growing importance of traineeships in addressing skills shortages. The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations has identified apprenticeships and traineeships as critical components of Australia’s training system, helping businesses develop skilled workers in sectors where demand continues to rise.
Encouragingly, participation is increasing. Recent reporting indicates that apprenticeship and traineeship uptake has been growing again across Australia, reflecting renewed interest from both employers and employees in practical workplace training.
South Australia is also seeing strong growth in participation, with the state leading the nation in the number of people commencing apprenticeships and traineeships in recent years.
The perfect match: traineeships and qualifications
One of the strengths of traineeships is how easily they integrate with nationally recognised qualifications.
Many traineeships are linked to Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma qualifications, allowing employees to gain formal credentials while developing practical experience in their workplace. This combination of structured training and hands-on work ensures learning is immediately relevant. Employees are not only studying theory but applying their knowledge in real situations, especially through face-to-face learning.
For employers, this means training directly supports workplace productivity while building long-term capability within the organisation.
